Examples of Fern's work—

On Thursday, December 4th we all have a special opportunity to share painting time with Fern Beu.  Fern is a talented and successful local artist who is going to share her insights and demonstrate her unique process that she uses to start her paintings.  You will get to put her process into practice and she will also have some of her completed work on display.

Fern will talk briefly about the path that has brought her to the place where she can envision a painting and then bring it to life.  While actively painting an under-painting for a simple still life she will describe and demonstrate her truly unique process.  She will talk about how to decide what to paint, how to ‘enter’ into a new painting and how to approach the process in a way that guides the painting to its’ planned destination.   As a clinical psychologist she has an interest in how artists approach their work and how they get in their own way.  She will explain how she has discovered, and removed painting habits that get in her way; leading, hopefully, to eye-opening moments for us.

Her process is unlike anything I have come across and I believe it might open each of us to a new way of seeing the things that we want to paint; because seeing a thing is the critical first step of being able to represent it.

After her underpainting is complete (using oil paint) Fern will turn to us and guide us through the creation of our own simple, still-life under-paintings.  Painting participation is encouraged/desired but not mandatory.

To participate, you will need the supplies listed below.

·       1 or 2 items for your still life.  Fern recommends fruits, vegetables, or simple objects.

·       Painting surface (canvas, prepared board or appropriate paper).  Minimum size - 11 x 14”

·       Optional easel, working flat on a table is also acceptable.

·       A transparent paint, for example burn sienna or raw umber (no cadmiums).

o    For acrylics an extender is necessary to keep the paint wet.  Without it, the process will not be successful.

o   For watercolors a masking medium is necessary

·       Brushes, cleaners, etc.

·       Paper towel

Space is limited.  Sign up in the Wall Street Room by 3:00 pm Tuesday, December 2nd
