GPS Location Crew Activity in Your Area
Spatial Systems Associates, Inc. (SSA) will be conducting a water and sewer mapping survey for the Town of Centreville during the week of December 16 – 20 and resuming weekly on January 6th through the end of February. The work will be performed on weekdays and during daylight hours. SSA will not be working on days that Queen Anne’s County schools are closed.
SSA’s field staff will be wearing yellow safety vests and will have a public information handout to provide residents if requested. The handout will include Town contact information should the resident have additional questions. SSA’s efforts at any particular property is expected to be less than 10 minutes.
Spatial Systems staff will be utilizing global positioning system (GPS) technology to collect locations for fire hydrants, water valves, sewer manholes, sewer cleanout, water curb stops and water meters. Many of these items are in the public right of way and easily seen. Some of these items are on private property and may be in people’s yards and close to homes and potentially covered by grass or landscaping.
SSA will be using metal detectors and probing rods to attempt to find the utility infrastructure. When a suspected item is found, SSA will use a small hand shovel to visually expose the item to confirm that it is a utility item and take a photo of it. SSA will then replace the soil and grass neatly. Accurately locating and documenting these items will be beneficial to residents in the event that the Town Utility staff need to find it quickly in the dark of night, or if it is obscured by snow or leaves.
If a resident denies SSA access to their property, SSA field staff will politely vacate.
