June 4:  CERT Sponsored CPR/AED/LifeVac Training – All Invited!
by Debi Wells Hooper, CERT Assistant Coordinator

On June 4, 6pm – 8pm, at the Symphony Village Clubhouse, Steven Yetton, Emergency Medical Services Training Coordinator for Queen Anne’s County Department of Emergency Services, will partner with the Symphony Village Community Emergency Response Team (SV CERT) to lead potentially life-saving training for all residents who register to attend.

This training class will highlight bystander (or layperson) cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), focusing on the hands-only method -- which is faster and easier to learn than traditional CPR (it does not include mouth-to-mouth resuscitation).  Hands-only, also referred to as compression-only, minimizes interruptions in chest compressions, is less exhausting and, most importantly, reduces CPR initiation time to result in delivery of a greater number of chest compressions and relief to the person having cardiac arrest.

Steven will cover who needs CPR, how to administer CPR, and how to call for help -- yes, there is a ‘best practices’ method to call for help! CPR is typically used in conjunction with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) when one is available to, hopefully, restart the heart of a person in cardiac arrest.  Consequently, attendees will also learn how to use the AED effectively, and how to work as a team to administer CPR and the AED.

The June 4 training will focus on adults; however, Steven will also briefly cover child and infant CPR as well. Lastly, the training will cover choking and the use of the LifeVac device.  AED and LifeVac equipment are (fortunately!) installed in our Clubhouse.  Knowing how to use this equipment and how to employ CPR could potentially save a life! To attend please register for this CERT-sponsored class in the Wall Street Room.
