This is a reminder to be vigilant when you receive a phone call or an email requesting your help. Return email addresses and Caller ID numbers can be faked, so you really can't be certain who is actually trying to make contact.

Local police are investigating new incidents where criminals have succeeded in getting cash from Centreville residents who were quite convinced that they were speaking with a relative in distress.

These are bold crimes, more than a computer scam trying to get your credit card. It's someone offering to come to your house to pick up cash for an emergency.

Be very very careful before responding to urgent phone calls or emails. If you are tempted to respond, you might want to call the Centerville Police Department at 410-758-8437 first.
